[Lexie]
I swear I can feel her.
Biding her time. Waiting to rip my life apart.
[Harriet]
I can hear her through the wall.
She has no idea what I did.
No idea what I’m capable of.
Lexie’s got the perfect life. And someone else wants it…
Through the wall is a chilling, gripping and breathtaking psychological thriller that will change the way you see your neighbours or anyone who lives with you through the wall.
My thoughts
Lexie loves her home. She feels safe and secure in it – and loved, thanks to her boyfriend Tom. But recently, something’s not been quite right. A book out of place. A wardrobe door left open. A set of keys going missing…
Tom thinks Lexie’s going mad – but then, he’s away more often than he’s at home nowadays, so he wouldn’t understand. Because Lexie isn’t losing it. She knows there’s someone out there watching her. And, deep down, she knows there’s nothing she can do to make them stop…
Set in London, in a luxury apartment block, the story is set around the lives of Lexie, girlfriend of Tom & desperate for a baby, and Harriet, a talented musical composer with a complicated past that has left her pretty mentally unstable. They are next door neighbours, and have never really met. They don’t actually know each other personally; other than googling information about one another. Through The Wall is a gripping story of obsession and jealousy that delved into how easy it is to find out everything about people (especially those who regularly use various forms of social media) and how those manufactured, seemingly perfect lives are actually anything but.
The book is written from both women’s perspectives, and this allows the reader to really get to know the inner-workings of the characters’ minds and lives. I really liked this approach. I’m definitely into the idea of getting inside the character’s head and being able to know what goes in there. I loved how much depth every single character within the book was given, and being inside the minds of such interesting women made for an exciting and gripping read. At times I felt some empathy for both Harriet and Lexie, and then suddenly Harriet would act out again and do something awful, leaving me once again bewildered by her state of mind. Lexie had her issues too, but she definitely didn’t feel as dangerous or unpredictable as Harriet.
I really liked the plot! The flow of the story was intense and dramatic. It had me gripped right from the start. I honestly couldn’t put this one down, and I suddenly felt very sad once I realised I’d arrived at the very last page.
With Through The Wall, Caroline Corcoran has created a truly chilling and creepy debut with perplexing characters whose lives become entangled. Things gradually grow more and more sinister and the tension is almost unbearable at points, right up until the ominous unexpected ending. The writing is fantastic and I think it’s definitely one of the best thrillers I’ve read in a long time.
**Thanks again to Avon books, who kindly sent me an advanced copy to read and review. The book will officially be released in October, and I highly recommend checking this one out!**
