The murder trial of the century is here.
A ruthless prosecutor
A brilliant defence lawyer
A defendant with a secret
And a serial killer on the jury…
‘To your knowledge, is there anything that would preclude you from serving on this jury?’
Murder wasn’t the hard part. It was just the start of the game. Joshua Kane has been preparing for this moment his whole life. He’s done it before. But this is the big one.
This is the murder trial of the century. And Kane has killed to get the best seat in the house. But there’s someone on his tail.
Someone who suspects that the killer isn’t the man on trial.
Kane knows time is running out – but will he get to the conviction without being discovered?
My thoughts:
Basically, the title says it all. The killer is on the jury. The question is why?
Thirteen follows the story of a high-profile murder trial. A Hollywood film star is accused of murdering his wife and, of course, he says he didn’t do it. Criminal defence attorney Eddie Flynn steps in to defend the actor and prove his innocence. But there’s someone else following the case just as keenly as Eddie is…
The book is a gripping thriller story told from two different points of view - Eddie’s and the killer’s. The chapters switch between the two lead characters and the plot unfolds in two different perspectives on the same timeline.
This makes for a gripping and very entertaining reading experience, and allows the author to give the whole picture of what’s happening even though the characters themselves don’t always have the full story.
Steve Cavanagh’s writing is superb, and I loved that this is essentially a courtroom drama combined with a serial killer thriller. The trial aspect was particularly well written, and I found it such a gripping read - the tension was almost unbearable at times.
Cavanagh’s characters were cleverly brought to life with a storyline that was not only intense, but also incredibly clever and exciting. It was everything that a good thriller should be: exciting, surprising, shocking and nail-biting.
The book moves at a good pace, and there are many twists and revelations throughout. I was kept guessing for most of the time, which for me was refreshing. It kept me interested in what was happening and although it wasn’t really too complex, it was tense and the plot worked really well overall. The author totally reeled me in with this storyline and all the threads laced together perfectly to create one of the best fast paced thrillers I have read in years.
Thirteen is an outstanding and heart racing read. A true page-turner, and a book that totally lives up to its hook! As legal thrillers go, it doesn’t get much better than this. Afast paced crime novel and an excellent read that I strongly recommend. A truly incredible and exhilarating read from start to finish.
