My Rating ★★★★
When you read this book, you will make many assumptions. It’s about a jealous wife, obsessed with her replacement. It’s about a younger woman set to marry the man she loves. The first wife seems like a disaster; her replacement is the perfect woman. You will assume you know the motives, the history, the anatomy of the relationships.
You will be wrong.
My thoughts:
I picked up this book not knowing what to expect, but it very quickly drew me in with a vengeance, using any free moment I had to read just a little more. I enjoyed every word, and dreaded the moment when I had to put it down.
The Wife Between is an engrossing and addictive read that I genuinely just couldn’t stop reading! I really enjoyed the various plot twists and interestingly complex characters. This is a particularly difficult one to review without revealing any spoilers, as the book is filled with many thrilling twists and turns. I really enjoyed the various plot twists and interestingly complex characters. The two lead female characters are really fascinating and I loved reading about Vanessa, the ex-wife with issues, just as much as her replacement, Nellie.
At first, Vanessa appears jealous and obsessed with Nellie, the young and pretty new woman in her ex-husband’s life, who is in many ways just like her former self. The similarities between the two women is eerily portrayed through a combination of flashbacks, memories, and core moments in each of their relationships with Richard, the successful businessman who seems to be the perfect husband.
Initially, it appears that Vanessa is having a hard time dealing with reality, and she struggles to keep things together after her recent divorce with Richard. As more and more about her past is revealed, it becomes clear that Vanessa should not be underestimated or judged too quickly. She is in fact a very strong character with a point to prove, and an intriguing plan for revenge and closure. Vanessa is determined to stop Richard’s marriage from happening and nothing will stop her.
Nellie is also perhaps not all she first appears to be. She seems like a sweet girl, maybe a little naïve and young, but it is clear that she is completely smitten with her fiancé, Richard. She feels she has found her perfect dreamlike life with a dashing, loving and successful husband. But, like Vanessa, she too, turns out to have a few dark secrets lurking in her past.
Overall, this story certainly had a few surprises that I didn’t see coming, and the plot kept me guessing and on my toes pretty much from start to finish. It is a very enjoyable, highly entertaining domestic thriller that kept me engrossed throughout. I was surprised by just how much I liked it! A very clever thriller.
