'My heart has made its mind up.'
'And I'm afraid it's you.'
The Orange provides the perfect introduction to Wendy Cope, one of Britain's wittiest, best-selling and best-loved poets.
In poems that are sometimes laugh-out-loud funny and sometimes very moving, Wendy Cope offers reflections on love and life: from the joy of falling – and being – in love to the pain of breaking up, from memories of people loved and lost to the small moments that make life worth living.

My thoughts:
In The Orange and Other Poems, thirty-one of Wendy Cope’s poems are collected to present her reflections on love and life.
The Orange was my favourite of the collection. It perfectly touches on the simple joy of being alive. There’s something in the poem’s simplicity and directness that feels comforting on a bad day. It encourages readers to pay attention to the little things: an ordinary moment between friends, sharing a piece of fruit.
Throughout her work in this book, Cope highlights the beauty and pain of the small details of life in a light-hearted way, often laced with humour. Her work is also very moving, venturing from the joy of falling (and being) in love to ways to comfort readers as they deal with a painful break-up or the memories of people loved and lost.
I had to do a fair bit of hunting to track down a copy of this one and have spoken with a few booksellers in Bath about it recently. I’m so pleased I was finally able to get my hands on one in the end! It’s a teeny tiny little introduction to Wendy Cope’s poetry, offering reflections on love and life. This is a book I want to savour and share with my friends. Just wonderful.
