Late last year an Instagram follower reached out to me to ask if I could recommend any local book clubs in our area. The message stood out to me because I’ve always wanted to be part of a great reader’s group. I just hadn’t had much luck in finding one.
Book clubs can help you meet new people and make new friends, all in a relaxed atmosphere. They are a great addition to a social calendar, being a low key and relatively inexpensive activity. No matter how serious your book discussions are, just getting together and chatting on a regular basis can be fun!

My local library does host quite a few different book clubs. I’d attended one or two but always left feeling underwhelmed or frustrated. My main issue was the way in which these groups went about choosing the reading material. One group I joined would simply flick through the printed library catalogue, point at a page at random and settle on the first book title they saw. This method wasn’t exactly successful, and I found that almost every book selection was something I really struggled to find an interest in. Having no say whatsoever in what we might be reading next left me feeling uninspired and disappointed with the reading I was doing as part of the group.
So, when I was approached about this, we soon got chatting more and decided it might be fun to create our own book club instead. I’m so glad we saw it through. We currently have nine book club members: Me (Olivia), Liv, India, Helen, Janet, Fiona, Emma, Emily and Nicola.
