Shakespeare & Company
Opposite the Notre Dame Cathedral, this cramped and chaotic place (especially when it is full of tourists) is incredibly stocked, and has a fantastic atmosphere. Everywhere you look, books are all around you. Each time I visit I'm blown away by the unique atmosphere of the place, and all the little unique touches. Despite being located in the heart of Paris, thankfully the bookshop stocks publications written in English, so I almost always seem to find something special to bring home with me! It's such a fun experience to pick up a book here and get it stamped with the famous Shakespeare and Company logo when you pay at the till.
Famously, above the bookshop, Shakespeare and Company house travellers who work in the book shop for a few hours each day. This was originally set up for struggling writers who needed a place to stay in Paris. In Ernest Hemingway’s classic, A Moveable Feast, the author dedicated a chapter to this beloved bookstore..
