A week is a long time to spend with your family…
It’s Christmas, and the Birch family is gathering for the first time in years.
Olivia, the eldest daughter, has returned from treating an epidemic abroad and must go into quarantine for seven days. Her mother has decided it’s the perfect opportunity to spend some ‘special time’ together.
Her youngest sister wholeheartedly disagrees. Her father isn’t allowed an opinion.
When no one can leave the house, seven days for the Birches feels like an eternity.
Especially when they’re all harbouring secrets. One of whom is about to come knocking on their door…
My thoughts:
Seven Days of Us is an engaging festive read featuring the dysfunctional Birch family, forced to spend 7 days together for the first time in years over Christmas and New Year. Told through alternating points of view, throughout the novel secrets are exposed, true feelings are revealed, and broken relationships are mended.
The story is gripping and the short chapters make for an engaging and highly addictive read. It’s a contemporary fiction family drama novel told from the perspective of each of the major characters in the main family. The writing is intriguing, touching and hugely entertaining.
I felt the characters were distinct, well developed and interesting. They spend a lot of time self-reflecting and experience many introspective moments, which in my opinion is what makes the book such a worthy read. The plot iswarm, witty and engaging - a feel good story that explores the dynamics within the Birch family as they are forced to spend a tension filled week together in quarantine over the holidays.
Overall, I found this to be a wonderful feel good read, perfect for Christmas! Itis the perfect heart-warming family novel, a quick and whimsical little festive read. Seven Days of Us is the debut novel from Francesca Hornak, and I truly hope to read more fiction work from her in the near future! I highly recommend this one for a classic Christmas read.
