How can you mend a broken heart?
Do you write a letter to the woman who left you = and post it to an imaginary address? Buy a new watch, to reset your life? Or get rid of the jacket you wore every time you argued, because it was in some way… responsible?
Combining the wry musings of a rejected lover with playful drawings in just three colours – red, black and white – bestselling author of The Red Notebook, Antoine Laurain, and renowned street artist Le Sonneur have created a striking addition to the literature of unrequited love.

My thoughts:
Thank you to Gallic books who kindly sending me out an early copy in exchange for an honest review..
Red is My Heart is a stunning collection of words and images in collaboration with Parisian Street artist, Le Sonneur, about how to mend a broken heart. It features a series of anecdotes and musings from a rejected lover who is grappling with feelings of heartbreak, rejection and loneliness; trying to find meaning in the mundane and the ordinary.
I have already read and enjoyed several of Antoine Laurain’s books, so I’m always interested to read more. His writing can feature quirkiness, mystery, or even time travel elements, and you never know what this French author is going to do next!
Red Is My Heart introduces us to the forsaken, broken hearted lover left behind. At the outset, he writes a letter to his lost love but makes up an address, so it is forever undelivered. Her memory haunts him while he haunts the places they went together.
I love that, with this new novella, the author has collaborated with a street artist to create something totally fresh and intriguing. With the bright red and embossed wraparound cover that closes like a diary, the paperback itself has an interesting aesthetic design. And within its pages is an exciting work of visual arts. The imagery in the book is all black and white with hints of red, and there are visual motifs of locks and ladders to creatively elaborate on the feelings of being shut out or hoping to climb out of despair.
The prose is often written in various forms, including sections upside down or set out in other unusual formats. The interplay of the text and art creates something powerful. The poems tell stories of love lost and I could feel the anguish. Each story really spoke to me in a profound way.
I think I would really struggle to choose one story or poem as my favourite as I loved them all. Everyone who reads this book will relate to at least one of these stories. They will stick with you long after you have finished reading.
I cannot stress enough how much I love Antoine Laurain’s storytelling. This is quite the emotional little work, but in a subtle, quiet way. Of course there are some heart breaking moments, but the Parisian setting and artwork by Le Sonneur add so much atmosphere and playfulness to the tone of the book.
The combination is quirky,, witty and imaginative. I loved it.
