Murder on the Orient Express
Adapted for the stage by Ken Ludwig
Tonight I had the pleasure of attending the opening press night of Murder on the Orient Express at Bath’s Theatre Royal, and what a spectacular evening it was!
Adapted for the stage by Ken Ludwig and directed by Lucy Bailey, this thrilling production brings Agatha Christie’s classic mystery to life with dazzling style, rich atmosphere, and pitch-perfect performances.
From the moment the curtain rises, the audience is transported into the opulence of the famous train, thanks to an impressively designed set that seamlessly shifts between carriages, conveying both luxury and claustrophobia in equal measure. The staging is nothing short of masterful—every detail, from the gleaming wood-panelled interiors to the atmospheric snowfall beyond the windows, immerses us in the world of 1930’s glamour and intrigue. The clever use of lighting heightens the drama, casting long, noirish shadows that enhance the tension, whilst the elegant period costumes complete the sense of authenticity.
At the heart of it all is the brilliant Michael Maloney as Hercule Poirot. Maloney’s performance is a triumph—meticulously mannered, sharp-witted, and exuding just the right balance of warmth and authority. His Poirot is magnetic, drawing us into his deductions with a quiet intensity that keeps audiences hanging on every word.

The supporting cast is equally impressive, bringing Christie’s vivid characters to life with flair. Bob Barrett delivers a compelling performance, while Mila Carter, Debbie Chazen, and Rebecca Charles each bring depth and nuance to their roles. Simon Cotton, Jean-Baptiste Fillon, and Christine Kavanagh shine in their respective parts, adding to the rich ensemble chemistry. Paul Keating, Iniki Mariano, and Rishi Rian also make strong impressions, ensuring that every scene crackles with energy and intrigue.
Bailey’s direction expertly balances suspense and theatricality, maintaining a brisk pace while allowing the tension to build. The play never loses sight of its wit and charm, and the moments of levity provide a delightful contrast to the darker undercurrents of the mystery.
Whether you’re a devoted Agatha Christie fan or new to Murder on the Orient Express, this production is an absolute treat. It’s an enthralling, stylish, and impeccably crafted theatrical experience that will leave audiences spellbound. If you have the chance to catch it on tour, don’t hesitate—it’s a journey well worth taking. Now showing at Bath's Theatre Royal from 11th - 15th March!
