Imagine the worst thing a friend could ever do.
This is worse.
When Mel receives an unexpected email from her oldest friend Abi, it brings back memories she thought she had buried forever. Their friendship belonged in the past. To those carefree days at university.
But Abi is in trouble and needs Mel’s help, and she wants a place to stay. Just for a few days, while she sorts things out. It’s the least Mel can do.
After all, friends look out for each other, don’t they?
My thoughts:
I Invited Her In is a twisted thriller all about friendship, betrayal, jealousy and revenge. The story deals with the dark effects of secrecy between friends.
Mel hears from a long-lost friend from university after nineteen years. Abigail has just split up with her husband and wants to reconnect.Mel invites her to stay and, for a while, all goes well, until Abigail begins an affair with far-reaching consequences and lots of heartache.
The writing was gripping, and it didn’t take me long to be drawn in by interesting characters with complex backstories. I enjoyed the way the story was told, via inner thoughts, the perspectives varying from one character to another in each chapter. As the story developed, I thought the plot felt a little lacking in unpredictability, and I easily was able to foresee most of the upcoming twists and turns. I had worked out one or two secrets quite quickly, however, I wasn’t always sure what Abi’s intentions might be.
If anything, I would’ve loved for things to get even deeper, darker and more intense. The secrets and lies between Abigail and Mel were intriguing, and I think some of those moments could have been further developed. For me, this book was mostly compelling, original and entertaining. I enjoyed reading it very much, and it did keep me interested. It lacked enough tension throughout to really stand out for me though.
Overall, for me much of the storyline was either very far-fetched, or on the other hand, felt a little too tame. I Invited Her In wasn’t quite dark or mysterious enough for a psychological thriller. I’d personally recommend the book more for fans of domestic thrillers, modern fiction or ‘chick lit.’ This was a fun read, and definitely worth checking out, but on the whole I had hoped for better and was left somewhat disappointed.
