In February the book club met up again for an evening in a relaxed coffee shop setting and had a lot of fun chatting about all sorts of things! This time we were discussing our first book together, The Lido by Libby Page.
As a group we collectively loved the book and agreed that The Lido is a simple story of a simple life and the joy of finding great happiness. We felt the characters were really likeable, especially Rosemary. We enjoyed the friendship between Kate and Rosemary which felt natural, sweet and believable. The age difference really didn’t seem to matter which was also great to see.
Janet thought the moment of Kate’s Panic in the lido changing rooms was particularly interesting and relatable.
India loved the moment of the young schoolboy sitting at the bottom of the pool in total peace and quiet. She felt it was really poignant and special to see someone take a little bit of time to find somewhere he could feel totally alone, calm and undisturbed.
We enjoyed The Lido very much and felt it was a fun choice to launch our new book club with. This time we chose Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng for our next read, and agreed to meet again in a month or so.
Due to the coronavirus situation and social distancing right now, we have yet to arrange a meeting for our next get together. Unffortunately our usual meeting spot is now closed until further notice, but we are exploring our options. We may just delay our next meet for a while to see what happens with everything going on in the world, or we may have an online group discussion over Skype or something similar.
I'll keep you posted on what we decide!
