My thoughts:
I first read Eve of Man when it was released back in 2018 and wanted to refresh my memory before continuing on part two this Winter. Reading this a second time I felt this book was pretty underrated when it came out. I don’t remember hearing all that much about it at the time which seems a real shame. I personally enjoyed Eve of Man and found it very entertaining. It’s a really addictive read and this time I binged it in one sitting.
This is first book in the trilogy provides a compelling story and lots to sink your teeth into. Perfect for fans of The Hunger Games. The book begins by focusing on scene-setting, character introductions and world-building. I found the world they live in fascinating, how humans and climate change had ruined the planet, London is now half under floodwater.
Eve is sixteen, the first girl born in fifty years and now about to be palmed off to any boy who might be capable of ensuring the survival of the human race. Eventually she realises her situation is wrong and begins to long for freedom. Eve is a great main character to follow. At the beginning of the book, she is a young girl about to start meeting three potential boys who have been picked for her, one of which she will choose to start repopulating the world with. We watch as she finds her voice, as she realises the world around her is not as it seems. Questioning everything she has been taught to believe in, she gradually starts to stand up for herself more, pushing the boundaries of her confinement and ultimately rebelling against her captors.
The book is very well written, with engaging characters and a storyline that develops with good pace. Secrets and lies combine to force Eve into growing up and becoming more than her keepers expect. The plot is intelligent but simple enough to tear through quickly with its fast-paced story and easy language.
The authors have succeeded in creating an engaging and fast paced dystopian world of their own with likeable characters on a unique journey. The multi-narrative works really well in a book like this and helps to make the characters feel more real.
Overall, Eve of Man is an enjoyable, entertaining YA dystopian novel. With a fascinating concept. The first half is dedicated to scene-setting, explanations and character introductions, and the second half picks up the pace with action-packed scenes and everything at stake. In the final pages we are left on a cliff edge. I’m now eager to get started on part two of the trilogy, The Eve Illusion!
