Café Campana
No visit to Musee D’Orsay is complete without a stop at Café Campana. The Musee D’Orsay is one of my favourites and was voted the best museum in the world by TripAdvisor in 2018. It truly is a magical place. If you’re in Paris for a short visit and only have time to visit one, this is it.
The museum holds mainly French art dating from 1848 to 1914, including paintings, sculptures, furniture, and photography. But perhaps the most mesmerising thing about the Museum is the setting. It is housed in the former Gare d'Orsay, a Beaux-Arts railway station built in 1900. Inside you can view a rich collection of impressionist works including paintings by French artists like Degas, Monet, Cezanne, and Van Gogh. I especially love this museum as it is much more manageable than the Louvre, which can often be a little overwhelming. There are also significantly fewer crowds here.
And if you climb to the museum's top balcony, you can catch a breath-taking view of the Sacré-Coeur through the museum's huge transparent clock.
It is on this same floor that you will find Café Campana.
It's simply one of the coolest spots in Paris to sip coffee or have a meal. You’ll be in awe of one of the Orsay clocks in the background and there are great lamps lighting the dining area with a warm glow. When the weather is good you can step out onto the terrace and see the view from the top. Café Campana is an absolute must-see during a museum visit. And they of course serve a wonderful café au lait! If you’re wanting a light bite they also offer an excellent range of pastries and desserts. We particularly enjoyed their take on a classic French Rum Baba last time we visited.
