Alfred Hitchcock Presents - The Musical
Directed by John Doyle

As someone who's been captivated by Alfred Hitchcock’s films for as long as I can remember—ever since my days at film school and beyond—it's exciting to see a new project inspired by his work. Hitchcock’s knack for building suspense and creating unforgettable characters has always fascinated me, and I love how many of his films were originally adapted from books. Rebecca and Strangers on a Train are two of my all-time favourites, but let’s not forget The Birds, based on Daphne du Maurier’s novel, and Psycho, inspired by Robert Bloch’s chilling book. Each of these stories captures the essence of Hitchcock’s genius, blending the unsettling with the utterly gripping.

And now, Alfred Hitchcock Presents - The Musical, currently playing at the Theatre Royal in Bath, brings that same suspenseful atmosphere to the stage, but with a very fun twist. Directed by John Doyle, this new musical is a fresh take on the Hitchcock legacy, combining the thrill of his stories with the energy and creativity of live theatre. Throughout the show we meet a paranoid housewife, a duplicitous jazz singer, a witness to murder, an escaped convict and a man literally on the edge, all struggling to survive and eager to share their stories. It's a bit like watching one of his films, but with more singing and dancing—and it's just as captivating!

The set design is truly something special. The production takes a minimalist approach, but it’s packed with atmosphere. The clever use of lighting, shadows, and sleek design elements brings to life the eerie, mysterious world we associate with Hitchcock’s films. It’s the perfect backdrop for the suspense that builds through every scene, and it really pulls you into the experience. The creative team has done an excellent job of creating that Hitchcockian tension, and it’s visually stunning.

Casting director Ginny Schiller has put together a stellar cast for the production, and they are all fantastic. Scarlett Strallen brings elegance and charm to her role, while still capturing the hint of danger that Hitchcock’s leading women are known for. Sally Ann Triplett adds a fiery edge to her performance, balancing strength with vulnerability. Nicola Hughes and Gary Milner each bring their own unique flair to their characters, adding both depth and humour. And Damian Humbley’s stage presence is electric—he has an ability to draw you in and hold your attention whenever he's on stage.

The music is a real highlight of the show, blending haunting melodies with catchy tunes that keep you tapping your feet even as the suspense builds. I love the soundtrack and it’s clear that John Doyle’s direction keeps the energy high. Each of the musical numbers enhance the storytelling in a way that makes the entire experience feel like a thrilling, rollercoaster ride.
