A Few Thoughts on YA Fiction
Lately, I have found myself sometimes coming back to YA fiction as an older reader. While the genre is predominantly aimed at teenagers, I was intrigued to find out that approximately half of YA readers are adults. We all read books differently depending on where we are in our lives, how old we are, our life experiences and so on. In the last year or so I’ve had the pleasure of reading a few really enjoyable YA books. These are some that especially stood out for me:
✴Every Day | David Levithan – This fantasy fiction explores the idea of a soul that wakes up in a different person’s body each day. Throughout the book the author explores what it means to be genderless, without a body, and without a family in a fascinating and touching way. A really nice blend of a YA romance and fantasy novel.
✴The Life and Death of Sophie Stark | Anna North– This is a beautifully written, mysterious and totally page-turning story about such an enigmatic character. Sophie Stark is a character you will always remember, and so is her story.
✴The Hate U Give | Angie Thomas– This novel is tremendously moving and just so current – a fantastic, powerful and completely unforgettable read. The book is honest, thoughtful, and emotional throughout. It really stood out to me and I didn’t expect this to be such a powerful and moving read.
✴In Paris With You | Clementine Beauvais- a very sweet and thoughtful book. The story is romantic, poignant and very original. Iloved the unconventional writing style – the book reads entirely as one long poem. Reading each paragraph line by line as a poem added another layer of intrigue and originality to the storytelling.Paris provides the perfect romantic backdrop for the two main characters.

With this in mind, I’ve sensed my reading choices tend to adapt to my current mood a great deal. I’ve always loved the process of deciding what to read next, and in my eyes any excuse to go book shopping is always a good idea. Selecting books to read is part of what I love most about becoming part of the Bookstagram community – discussing great new releases and sharing book recommendations, both online and in person.
No matter what your favourite genres are, there are lots of places to go for inspiration in choosing what to read next. I really love scrolling through articles on BookRiot to find new recommendations based on specific genres. And, of course, I also turn to GoodReads, other blogs and bookstagram accounts to get an idea of what books my fellow bibliophiles are loving. After a while of interacting with other book lovers, it’s easy to get a sense of who eldr out there shares similar taste in genres, authors and styles.
